wood carving

There are a number of wood carvers in Corfu but few have the artistic creativity displayed by Spiros Fakiolas. He learnt the basic skills from his father whose works are to be found in many churches on the island.

Spiros uses mainly olive wood for his pieces as he finds that wood from old olive trees have an intense dark beauty which is quite unique. Most of his artworks are made from trees dating back 300-400 years but some can be as much as 2,000 years old.

He admits to drawing some inspiration from the 17th century master carver Grinling Gibbons. His workshop is in the tiny village of Makrades where he was born and still lives. He designed and carved the prizes for the 2007 Greek Open Croquet Championship held at our Club in September.

Spiros can be contacted on +30 69448 33806
